The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, has assured Ghanaians that GBC will provide equal access to all certified political parties for the upcoming elections.

Speaking at a conference on African journalism, big tech, elections, and data on October 7,2024, Prof. Amin Alhassan, stated that GBC will offer additional airtime for purchase to help parties share their messages. He however noted that in the future, GBC aims to provide free airtime to political parties once resources permit. Currently, selling airtime helps cover operational costs, as TV license payments are often challenging.

GBC has partnered with the National Media Commission to navigate the increased media penetration and social media influence in the upcoming elections.

“ It has never happened before. The level of media penetration, social media penetration, has never happened before for our election. So we are, from our side, going into an unknown territory”.

Prof. Alhassan emphasized GBC’s commitment to equal airtime for all parties, as mandated by Ghana’s Constitution. The State broadcaster after the launch of its election coverage platform earlier this year, has so far allowed various political leaders to explain their manifestos to the public on its morning show.
