The Running Mate for Convention People’s Party, Lawyer Wayoe Ghanamannti has voiced concerns regarding the licensing of small-scale mining as a significant factor contributing to the galamsey issue in Ghana.
“I keep telling people that the problem is the small-scale mining licensing regime. If you want to look for a solution to a problem, look for the root”, Ghanamannti said, during his appearance on GTV Breakfast Show on Monday, October 14, 2024
He stated that if his party secures power, they plan to transition small-scale mining operations to medium-scale mining. This shift would involve individuals pooling their resources to operate in a collective manner. Ghanamannti believes that this move could potentially generate employment opportunities for the country’s youth.
Furthermore, Ghanamannti emphasized that his party is committed to implementing measures to restore lands affected by galamsey activities.
The restoration process would involve allowing some lands to naturally recover through fallowing, while lands requiring more intensive intervention would undergo scientific engineering to regain their productivity.
