Former Kumbungu Constituency Member of Parliament, Ras Mubarak, has expressed concern that the Supreme Court is on a dangerous path.
This comes after the Supreme Court’s decision to stay Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling on vacant parliamentary seats
The Speaker’s ruling, prompted by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu’s motion, cited constitutional provisions requiring MPs seeking independent candidacies to vacate their seats.
The affected MPs – Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central) – were deemed to have breached these provisions by switching parties or intending to run independently.
Speaking on Joyprime’s “Ghana Connect” Mohammed Mubarak stated, “We’ve plunged into a constitutional crisis, on the precipice of something very dangerous for our country.
The Supreme Court’s ruling is bizarre and problematic.” He emphasized the need for calm heads but noted the ruling may escalate tensions.
Mubarak believes Speaker Alban Bagbin will challenge the Supreme Court’s decision, arguing that it’s oversteps parliamentary bounds.
“He’s going to make the point that the Supreme Court has overreached its power. And he’s going to make the point that the Supreme Court does not have those powers”.
The NDC minority sought to secure a majority in both the December 7th election and the 8th Parliament’s final days to advance their agenda and counter perceived NPP-imposed difficulties on Ghanaians.
