The Electoral Commission (EC) has directed the national executives of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) to nominate a new presidential candidate within 10 days following the passing of its flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor.

In light of the upcoming elections, the GFP is expected to act swiftly in nominating a suitable candidate to replace Akua Donkor, who passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra, on the ballot.

This decision was made after the Commission received official notification of Madam Akua Donkor’s death. Due to Madam Akua Donkor’s demise, the EC also temporarily halted the printing of presidential ballot papers, which were near completion.

In a statement issued and signed by the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations at the EC, Mr. Samuel Tettey, on October 29, 2024, the EC said, “The Commission has since informed the GFP to make arrangements to nominate a new Candidate and inform the Commission accordingly.”

In the meantime, the Commission has suspended the printing of Presidential Ballot Papers which were near completion.

The Electoral Commission extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of Madam Akua Donkor.

Madam Akua Donkor was the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), and until her demise, she was the 2024 presidential candidate for the party she formed.

Her passing marks a significant loss for the party and her supporters as the nation approaches the general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.
