The Electoral Commission of Ghana has issued directives regarding votes for the late Akua Donkor, the flag bearer of the Ghana Freedom Party. The Commission announced that any votes cast in her favour will be classified as rejected.

This significant decision comes amid growing concerns over the printed ballot, which still displays the image and party logo of Akua Donkor, despite her passing. The Commission has assured the public that while her name remains on the ballot, due to her untimely death, no votes will contribute to the final tally. “Votes cast in favour of Madam Akua Donkor will NOT be added to the Valid Votes Cast,” the Commission stated emphatically.

In their press release dated November 22, 2024, the Electoral Commission detailed their communication strategy, affirming that all members of their permanent and temporary staff have been informed of the protocol, as have the Agents of the Presidential Candidates. This measure is intended to preempt any confusion amongst election officials and ensure a smooth voting process on election day.

The clarification comes at a critical time as Ghana prepares for a closely watched election, underscoring the importance of accuracy and credibility in electoral processes. Political analysts suggest that while Akua Donkor’s presence on the ballot may initially cause some voter confusion, the Commission’s directive and public announcements should mitigate widespread misunderstanding.

As Ghanaians head to the polls, the Electoral Commission continues to emphasize the integrity of the election, urging citizens to exercise their voting rights responsibly and remain informed about any procedural changes.
