Special voting has kicked off in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, with about 7,342 voters expected to participate across 18 constituencies.
The exercise began smoothly with all necessary materials and machines, including Biometric Verification Machines (BVMs), arriving on time.
In the Tamale Central constituency, Presiding Officer, Muniru Musah said voting started at about 7:07 am, and 679 voters are expected to cast their ballots at the Jubilee Park voting center.
Security agencies, electoral commission officials, and journalists are expected to vote.
Political party agents are all present at the voting centre, with two police personnel stationed there to maintain calm and order.
Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Lucas Yilyel, expressed confidence that the exercise will be smooth, stating that all electoral materials, including those for election day, are in the region.
Earlier, the Parliamentary Candidates for the NPP, Sule Salifu, who is also the Mayor of Tamale, and the incumbent MP for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed were at the centre to monitor the exercise.
The MP said he is confident that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will retain power in the constituency. He cited the party’s proven track records and votes obtained in the last three elections as evidence of their strong support.
It is worth noting that Tamale Central has historically been a stronghold for the NDC. In the 2020 Ghanaian general election, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed won with 41,196 votes, representing 54.09% of the total votes cast.
The NDC has held the Tamale Central seat since 2004, with previous MPs including Alhassan Wayo Seini, Alhassan Fuseini Inusah, and Inusah Fuseini.
Similarly, a total of 268 voters are to cast their ballot at the Tamale North constituency, Sagnarigu 363, and Tamale South 187.
