A statue of President Nana Akufo-Addo located in front of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi has been partially damaged, sparking public concern.
On Monday morning, December 16, 2024, a large hole was noticed at the back of one of the statue’s legs. The cause of the damage is unclear. Some suspect it could be a deliberate act by individuals opposed to the statue, while others believe it may be due to construction flaws.
Doris Arhin, a resident, expressed surprise at the incident. “This was meant to honor the president. I am shocked one of its legs is broken, but I haven’t heard of anyone planning to destroy it,” she said.
Another resident, Esther Anosi, suggested that construction might have been rushed, leading to defects. “They were supposed to use two months, but they finished in two weeks. I think the idea behind the statue was good, but maybe the work wasn’t done properly,” she added.
The statue, unveiled by President Akufo-Addo during a tour of the Western Region, was meant to commemorate several development projects in the area. Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah highlighted initiatives such as the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital, the Sinohydro three-tier interchange, and the redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle as key achievements symbolized by the statue.
Authorities are yet to comment on the cause of the damage or plans for repairs.
