The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called on the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to sign the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-gay bill, into law before his term ends.

Speaking at the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Osu Castle, Dr. Kwakye emphasised the importance of the bill and urged the President to cement his legacy by approving it.

“For us Presbyterians, supporting this bill was a significant step, and we see it as our birthday gift for this year. Your Excellency, make our joy complete by assenting to the bill so it becomes law in Ghana,” Dr. Kwakye stated.

He added that the church seeks to preserve African cultural values through the gospel and expressed confidence that the President would fulfill this expectation.

Dr. Kwakye’s appeal follows the Supreme Court’s dismissal of two petitions challenging the constitutionality of the bill. On December 18, the Court rejected cases filed by journalist Richard Dela Sky and researcher Amanda Odoi.

The bill, passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, has sparked widespread national debate. Supporters believe it protects traditional family values, while opponents argue it violates human rights.

Although the Supreme Court has cleared legal obstacles, the final decision rests with President Akufo-Addo, who had earlier indicated he was waiting for legal clarity before taking action.
