President John Mahama has reiterated his commitment to justice for citizens who lost their lives during the 2024 and 2020 elections.
Speaking on the matter, the President emphasised the importance of accountability to prevent similar incidents in future elections.
“Even though this election passed peacefully, we must recognise that a few of our citizens tragically lost their lives. My understanding is that almost five citizens were killed in this election,” President Mahama said. “This is not the first time. In 2020, eight citizens lost their lives. If these incidents continue and justice is not served, it breeds impunity.”
President Mahama said this when he joined Muslims at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving service at the National Mosque in Accra.
He disclosed that he has directed his Executive Secretary to formally request a status report on investigations from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
“We must investigate and find out what led to these killings so that we can take action to prevent them from happening again,” he stated.
He also pledged to ensure that families of the deceased receive adequate support.
“Justice must be done. We will also ask the Attorney General, when he takes office, to determine fair and adequate compensation for the families of those who lost their lives.”
The investigations are expected to provide answers to the families of the deceased and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
