A group calling itself Progressive Zongo Youth of Asawase in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of Ashanti, has expressed gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for showing that his commitment towards the development of the Zongo communities goes beyond political rhetoric or gimmick and pledged its continued support to the President in this respect.

At a news conference at Aboabo in the Asokore Mampong Municipality, the leader of the group, Abdul Jalil Mohammed Basouka commended Government to dealing justly with the people of Asawase Zongo in respect of the package of one million, 750 thousand Ghana Cedis in compensation for dependents of all the seven men shot and killed by police personnel near Manso Nkwanta in the then Amansie West district of the Ashanti region last year.

In addition, the Government has pledged to start prosecuting the police personnel found to have acted outside the law in the matter to bring justice to the victims.

The Progressive Zongo Youth of Asawase also commend President Akufo-Addo for setting up the Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development and the establishment of the Zongo Development Fund aimed at addressing numerous challenges confronting over one thousand Zongo communities across the country.

He appealed to the Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development to impress upon the many Islamic/Arabic schools in the country referred to as ‘Mankaranta’ to integrate secular subjects in their curriculum, as a way of ensuring that graduates from these schools are employable.

Mr. Basouka also urged Government to find dedicated sources for the long term sustainability of the Zongo Development Fund. According to him, administration of the Fund through annual budget estimates will make it unsustainable.
