The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren as the new Head Coach of the Black Queens.

This announcement comes as the GFA looks to revitalize the team following the departure of former coach Nora Hauptle, whose tenure concluded in December 2024. Björkegren’s extensive coaching experience and proven track record make him a promising choice to lead the team into a new era.

Björkegren brings with him an impressive resume, boasting 18 years of coaching experience across various leagues and countries. His notable achievements include winning the Cyprus Women’s League with Apollon Ladies and the Swedish Damallsvenskan with Linköpings FC.

His accolades extend to being named Coach of the Season in Cyprus for the 2020–2021 season, highlighting his ability to inspire and lead teams to success. Furthermore, he shares a unique distinction with Sven Goran Eriksson as one of the few Swedish managers to have clinched domestic titles in two different nations, showcasing his adaptability and expertise.

In addition to his club successes, Björkegren has also contributed to national teams, serving as a Scout and Analyst for the Finland Women’s National Team. His international experience is complemented by his management of Beijing BG Phoenix in the Chinese Super League, where he led the team to commendable finishes in both the Chinese Women’s FA Cup and Super Cup.

Most recently, he held the position of Head Coach at Racing Louisville in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States, further enriching his coaching portfolio.

Known for his engaging and dynamic style of play, Björkegren emphasizes a philosophy centered around purposeful, attacking football. His strategic approach focuses on possession-based play, team discipline, and the flexibility to adapt to the strengths of his players.

This methodology aligns well with Ghana’s football ethos, which the GFA believes will enhance the performance of the Black Queens. His commitment to hard work, teamwork, and dynamism is expected to resonate with the players and fans.
