President John Dramani Mahama is set to meet the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, this weekend as part of efforts to bring lasting peace to Bawku in the Upper East Region.
On Tuesday, January 14, President Mahama visited Bawku and Nalerigu in a peace-building mission aimed at resolving the long-standing conflict in the area. During his visit, he met with Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, the overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, and assured him of the government’s commitment to peace.
“I came to appeal for patience and restraint from him and his people as we work towards a peaceful resolution,” President Mahama said.
He also mentioned a discussion with former President Nana Akufo-Addo, who had initiated mediation efforts during his tenure. Mahama highlighted the important roles played by the late Yagbonwura and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in solving the Dagbon conflict, saying their experience is vital for resolving the Bawku issue.
President Mahama confirmed his plans to visit the Asantehene on January 19 to discuss the conflict and explore ways to continue mediation. “I will update Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II on any progress after my meeting with Otumfuo,” he added.
The Bawku conflict has remained unresolved for decades, but President Mahama is determined to find lasting peace with the help of traditional leaders.
