Calls for reforms in Ghana’s local government system are intensifying, with stakeholders advocating for the direct election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) by the people.
Proponents argue that this reform is crucial for enhancing accountability, transparency, and grassroots democracy, ensuring local leaders are directly answerable to their communities.
In support of this push, the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) has taken a leading role in advocating for strengthened peacebuilding, digital accountable democratic governance, and active citizen engagement.
The initiatives aim to improve transparency, efficiency, and citizen participation, aligning Ghana’s governance structures with global standards for inclusivity and accountability.
