The Minority in Parliament has expressed concern over the changing stance of John Jinapor, the nominee for Minister of Energy, regarding private sector involvement in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to the Minority, Jinapor has shown inconsistency in his views within a short period. On September 18, 2024, Jinapor opposed private sector participation in ECG, arguing it could harm the company and reduce political interference. However, by January 7, 2025, he supported private sector involvement, particularly in metering and revenue collection.

This sudden change has led to suspicions, with the Minority questioning whether Jinapor’s new position could lead to the involvement of unauthorized intermediaries, often referred to as “goro boys,” in ECG activities.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the Minority urged Ghanaians to critically examine the implications of Jinapor’s responses during his vetting. They emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and a strong commitment to the public’s welfare in managing the country’s energy sector.

“The role of the Minister of Energy is crucial to Ghana’s development,” they said. “We must demand clear and consistent positions on critical issues like private sector involvement in ECG to ensure the best outcomes for all citizens.”

The Minority called on the public to stay vigilant and hold leaders accountable as the country navigates its energy challenges.
