President Mahama Establishes Constitutional Review Committee

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has taken a significant step toward fulfilling his promise to implement the Constitutional Review Process by establishing a Constitution Review Committee. The committee, comprising experts from diverse fields, is tasked with addressing gaps and challenges in the implementation of past constitutional review efforts and recommending amendments to the 1992 Constitution.

The committee, chaired by Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, includes the following distinguished members:

1.⁠ ⁠Justice Sophia Adinyirah – Member
2.⁠ ⁠Prof. Kwame Karikari – Member
3.⁠ ⁠Mrs. Charlotte Osei – Member
4.⁠ ⁠Dr. Godwin Djokoto – Member
5.⁠ ⁠Ibrahim Tanko Amidu – Member
6.⁠ ⁠Dr. Esi Ansah – Member
7.⁠ ⁠Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya – Secretary

Their mandate includes revisiting the work of the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee to identify implementation challenges. The committee will also engage key stakeholders to gather input on proposed amendments and make actionable recommendations aimed at strengthening Ghana’s democratic governance.

President Mahama emphasized his commitment to good governance and inclusive reform by appointing individuals with proven expertise and dedication to national service. “This committee represents a blend of experience, knowledge, and commitment to chart a path for a more robust constitutional framework,” he said.

The committee has been given five months to complete its work and present its recommendations to the government for consideration.

This development is expected to reignite discussions on constitutional reforms in Ghana and pave the way for amendments that address the evolving needs of the country’s democratic system. Stakeholders and the public eagerly anticipate the outcomes of this critical process.
