Some concerned citizens, traders, and opinion leaders of Klo-Agogo in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama through the Member of Parliament, Dr. Albert Tetteh Nyarkotey, and the Eastern Regional Minister Designate, Rita Adjei Awatey, to help upgrade the Klo-Agogo Market to a modern market to enhance economic activities in the area.
They made the appeal when GBC’s Correspondent Michael Kenetey, visited the market to ascertain the condition of the market and has filed this for Ghana Today.
Klo-Agogo Market, since its establishment on November 25, 1954, has not seen any rehabilitation or upgrade.
The market is the biggest market with the largest landmark size in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region and one of the well-patronised market centres in the country, as several people in and outside the country troop there every Tuesday and Friday to do business.
All kinds of foodstuffs are brought to the market in large quantities to help meet the food demand of the urban areas in the country and also help in the revenue generation for the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly.
However, a visit to the market by GBC News revealed that the market is in a terrible state, with most of the pillars rusted, serving as a death trap.
The road leading to the market centre is also in a terrible state, making transportation to and from the market difficult. Meanwhile, during President Mahama’s campaign tour in the Yilo Krobo Constituency of the Eastern Region, he promised to upgrade the Market to a modern market and also help rehabilitate the roads leading to the market centre to enhance economic activities in the area.
It is a result that Concerned Residents of Klo-Agogo, led by Pius Kwesi Tamatey and Isaac Nuertey, are making a passionate appeal to the President to fulfil his promise of upgrading the market.
The Assembly Man for Klo-Agogo Electoral Area, Harold Kofi Kumah, also speaking to Ghana Today, bemoaned the deplorable nature of the market. He also lamented the security challenge in the area, putting the lives of the people under threat, adding that a township with Senior High School and banks has no police station.
The Klo-Agogo Zonal Chief, Nene Martey, commended President John Dramani Mahama for nominating Mrs. Rita Adjei Awatey as the Eastern Regional Minister Designate. He appealed to her that when she becomes the substantive Regional Minister she should lobby for the upgrade of the Klo-Agogo Market to help promote economic activities in the area.
Some of the traders speaking to GBC News noted that they find it difficult to do business when there is rainfall. They appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to kindly come to their aid to help refurbish the market.
