The Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has expressed commitment to advancing the establishment of the University of Local Governance and Development.

This initiative, originally proposed under the previous administration, aims to address the pressing need for higher education opportunities in the country.

Hon. Ibrahim, during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 21, 2025, highlighted the challenges faced by senior high school graduates who struggle to secure admission into the limited number of universities available.

He noted the overwhelming number of candidates vying for a spot in these institutions, emphasising that the current educational landscape is insufficient to meet the demands of aspiring students.

During his remarks, Hon. Ibrahim underscored the importance of collaboration among former ministers to ensure the success of this initiative. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside experienced leaders in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy.

“If given the nod, Mr. Chairman, thank God, all the former ministers, like I said, we are all going to team up to work together. And looking at the number of SHS graduates who are knocking on the doors of the few universities that we have in the country, we need more universities. And therefore, it is one of the areas we are going to pursue,” Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim mentioned.

The proposal for the University of Local Governance and Development is not just about expanding access to higher education; it also seeks to enhance the quality of governance and community development in the country. By equipping future leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge, the university aims to foster a new generation of professionals dedicated to improving local governance and driving sustainable development.

The establishment of the University of Local Governance and Development could serve as a pivotal step toward addressing the educational needs of the nation, ultimately benefiting countless students and the communities they will serve.
