The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed a viral social media video falsely alleging that EC-branded bags contained dollars being smuggled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Commission clarified that the video originally captured the destruction of defective ballot papers for the Ahafo and Volta regions ahead of the 2024 General Election. These ballots, which had serialization errors, were destroyed by waste management company Zoomlion at the request of the EC.

The EC noted that the original audio of the video was replaced with a false voiceover claiming the bags held smuggled money instead of the discarded ballot papers.

To ensure transparency, the destruction of the ballot papers was supervised by EC staff and Zoomlion officials, with media representatives invited to cover the process. Certificates of destruction and the original footage are available to verify the facts and refute the misleading claims.

The EC has called on the public to disregard the false allegations and warned against spreading misinformation, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to transparency and integrity in its operations.
