In a modest corner of Abokobi in the Ga East Municipality, the Forever True Friends Foundation has been quietly rewriting the stories of some of the most vulnerable children in society.
Established seven years ago, this licensed non-governmental organisation (NGO) has grown into a beacon of hope for orphans and extremely vulnerable children, providing holistic care, education, and opportunities for a brighter future.
The foundation’s mission is as clear as it is inspiring: to nurture, educate, and empower children who have been left behind by life’s circumstances.
Over the years, the Forever True Friends Foundation has expanded its reach, touching the lives of countless children through its comprehensive programs and unwavering dedication.
Currently, the foundation supports over 20 children who reside at the shelter, with additional children receiving daytime care, meals, and educational support.
For children with grandparents or guardians, the foundation offers a flexible system where they return to their homes at night but still benefit from the nurturing care provided during the day.
The Director of the Foundation, Mrs. Jane Gerbs, in an interview with GBC Online, said that from toddlers as young as 2 years to teenagers up to 17 years old, the foundation ensures that every child receives the essentials for a dignified life, including school uniforms, footwear, meals, and emotional support.
“We believe that every child deserves a chance to succeed, regardless of their background; our goal is not just to provide for these children but to equip them with the tools and support they need to thrive,” she added.
At the heart of the foundation’s work is a commitment to holistic care. This includes providing nutritious meals, medical care, and a safe, nurturing environment for children to grow. The foundation operates a state-of-the-art children’s home, where qualified caregivers and volunteers work around the clock to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of the children.
“When children come to us, they are often carrying the weight of unimaginable trauma, our job is to help them heal, find joy, and rediscover their sense of self-worth,” Mrs. Gerbs said.
Education is a cornerstone of the foundation’s mission. Through partnerships with local schools and educational programs, the organisation ensures that every child under its care receives quality education tailored to their needs. For children who have fallen behind, the foundation provides tutoring and mentorship programs to help them catch up and excel.
“Education is the great equaliser; it gives these children the chance to dream big and break the cycle of poverty,” Mrs. Gerbs noted.
The foundation’s impact extends beyond the children it directly serves. Through community outreach programs, Forever True Friends Foundation collaborates with local leaders, schools, and families to raise awareness about child welfare and advocate for systemic change.
“We can’t do this work alone. It takes a community to create lasting change, and we are grateful for the support we have received from individuals and organisations alike.
We want more for these children so they can have access to quality education, healthcare, and above all, equal opportunities just like that of their peers,” Mrs. Jane Gerbs pleaded.
As the Forever True Friends Foundation looks to the future, its vision remains steadfast: a world where every child can live, learn, and thrive. But achieving this vision requires the continued support of donors, volunteers, and advocates.
