Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Defence Minister-designate, has assured Parliament’s Appointments Committee of his commitment to impartiality if approved for the role. Speaking during his vetting on January 28, Dr. Omane Boamah addressed concerns about his political affiliations and past role as Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He stated that his work with the NDC ended after the 2024 general elections and emphasized his ability to serve impartially. “No Ghanaian should have any fear about my impartiality. In fact, I can even be the chairperson of the Electoral Commission and remain impartial—that is my nature,” he affirmed.
Dr. Omane Boamah clarified that his role with the NDC was temporary and specifically tied to the 2024 elections. He added that he had already informed the party that his responsibilities had concluded and discussions were underway to find his replacement.
In addition to his assurances of neutrality, Dr. Omane Boamah used the opportunity to advise Ghanaians to avoid attempting to enlist in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) without meeting the required qualifications. Drawing on his experience as a medical professional and his knowledge of GAF operations, he warned that enlisting through improper means could have dire consequences.
“GAF training is rigorous and designed for individuals who meet the qualifications. Those who bypass these processes often face difficulties, and some even suffer severe outcomes during training,” he cautioned.
Dr. Omane Boamah pledged to ensure fairness in recruitment into the Armed Forces and stressed the importance of maintaining high standards for physical, mental, and emotional readiness. He added, “I will always advise unqualified applicants to reconsider their decisions and not compromise the system.”
If approved, Dr. Omane Boamah has promised to uphold professionalism and balance in his duties as Defence Minister.
