Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger officially withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on January 29, 2025, cementing their decision to leave after a year of deliberations. ECOWAS has announced measures to ease the transition, including continued recognition of ECOWAS-branded passports and visa-free movement for citizens of the three countries. “We remain committed to minimizing disruptions for our people,” said Omar Touray, ECOWAS Commission President.
The three nations, now part of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), cited dissatisfaction with ECOWAS policies and alleged foreign influence as reasons for their exit. “This is ending today; there is nothing left between ECOWAS and us,” stated Ibro Amadou Bacharou, a senior Nigerian official. The withdrawal has raised concerns about regional stability and cooperation.
ECOWAS has also urged member states to maintain trade privileges under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and support officials from the departing nations in ongoing assignments. These measures aim to uphold economic and social ties during a six-month grace period provided for potential reconciliation.
Thousands rallied in the capitals of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to celebrate the withdrawal, reflecting widespread support for their governments’ decision. “This is a step toward sovereignty,” said a demonstrator in Ouagadougou. The three nations have vowed to maintain visa-free travel and trade with other West African states despite leaving ECOWAS.
While ECOWAS leaders have expressed disappointment over the departure, they have left the door open for dialogue. “Together, let us continue to champion a peaceful and prosperous West Africa,” Touray added, signaling hope for future collaboration.
