Insurance marketer, Edgar Wiredu has voiced significant concerns regarding the protracted duration of court cases in Ghana, highlighting the detrimental effects this has on justice in the legal system.
In an interview with Kafui Dey on GTV’s breakfast show on January 29, 2024, He emphasized that many legal matters should not take years to resolve, arguing that such delays are unjust and unnecessary.
Wiredu’s remarks came in the wake of the recent withdrawal of charges against Dr. Opuni and Seidu Agongo, an event that has reignited discussions about the efficiency of the judicial process in Ghana.
He criticized what he described as outdated practices within the legal system, asserting that these traditional approaches must be reformed to foster progress and enhance public confidence.
“I don’t believe in the school that says that the rules of justice should cry slowly, If we want to move on as a country, there are certain things—what we may call traditional issues—that we should put an end to”, he stated.
Wiredu further argued that lengthy legal processes are particularly unjust for those who are innocent and find themselves caught in a system that seems to waste their time.
He proposed implementing a maximum timeline for resolving specific types of cases, suggesting that a nine-month cap could be a reasonable target.
“Why should some people be subjected to long years of what? Someone who is innocent should not have their life put on hold while the court system drags on,” he asserted.
