Minister-designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced plans for a new SIM card re-registration exercise under the Mahama administration.
During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, Mr. George assured Ghanaians that the upcoming re-registration process would be easier and stress-free compared to the previous one.
“We will do a proper SIM re-registration again… but this time, no one will go through the stress,” the Ningo-Prampram MP stated.
Ghana’s previous SIM registration, conducted in 2022 under the Akufo-Addo administration, faced challenges. Then-Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, noted that while progress had been made, nearly 10 million people who linked their SIM cards to their Ghana Cards had not completed the final stage of registration.
Despite these difficulties, the government reported significant achievements. By October 2022, about 28.9 million SIM cards had been linked to Ghana Cards, and 18.9 million had completed full registration. Officials said the exercise was necessary to enhance security and reduce fraud.
With a new government in charge, Sam George has promised a better approach to ensure all citizens can register their SIM cards without difficulty.
