Nsoatreman FC have officially withdrawn from the Ghana Premier League, as confirmed by Joel Gyempeh, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

This announcement comes on the heels of a distressing incident that occurred during the Matchday 19 game against Asante Kotoko, held at the Nana Kronmansah Park on Sunday.

The match, which ended with a narrow 1-0 victory for Asante Kotoko, has now been overshadowed by the tragic events that unfolded during the encounter.

The clash between the two clubs escalated dramatically when Francis Yaw Frimpong, affectionately known as Nana Pooley, a member of Asante Kotoko’s Supporters’ Communication Team, was reportedly stabbed by unknown assailants.

This grievous act has sent shockwaves through the football community, prompting both clubs to take immediate action.

In an interview with Accra-based MAX FM, Gyempeh revealed that Nsoatreman FC has formally communicated its decision to withdraw from the league to the GFA, highlighting the severity of the situation.

In light of the incident, both Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko have pledged their full cooperation in the ongoing investigations. The GFA has also responded decisively by indefinitely suspending Nsoatreman FC’s home venue, ensuring that safety and security are prioritised in the wake of this tragedy.

The association’s swift action underscores the seriousness with which they regard the safety of players, officials, and fans.

To further address the situation, the Ghana Police Service has assigned Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor to lead the investigation into the stabbing incident. The authorities are committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the attack on Nana Pooley and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.

As the dust settles on this heartbreaking chapter, the Ghanaian football scene is left grappling with the implications of such violence.

The withdrawal of Nsoatreman FC from the Ghana Premier League not only affects the team but also raises broader concerns about safety in sporting events.
