The Press Secretary and Spokesperson to the Vice President, Maame Ama Pratt, has stated that it is not enough to simply acknowledge having the first female Vice President; rather, it is a collective responsibility to ensure her success in office.

Pratt, who was recently appointed as the Press Secretary to Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, emphasized that for her, it is not about lip service but about taking action—something she is committed to at this moment.

According to her, she has long been a vocal supporter of the Vice President, rallying behind her for as long as she can remember, and has always admired her.

In an exclusive interview on the GTV Breakfast Show, she stated that for President Mahama to recognize Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s potential to empower women and select her as his Vice President is significant. She urged Ghanaians not to be passive observers who remain silent while advocating for women to reach top positions but to actively support her success.

Pratt also addressed the issue of societal expectations regarding women in politics. She criticized the tendency to scrutinize women while remaining silent about men in similar positions, insisting that women should be accepted as they are, just as men are.

She recalled interviewing Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang even before she was selected as Vice President and volunteering to work with her in any capacity. Pratt explained that she had publicly declared her allegiance to the cause long before the Vice President’s appointment, emphasizing that her support was not based on party affiliation.

“I came out 100 percent for her right from the beginning and faced a lot of backlash. People called me, advising that if I wanted longevity in the media, I shouldn’t show bias. I thanked them for their good intentions and advice, but I told them I was with her. Then I joined her on the campaign trail,” she said.

According to Pratt, her entire advocacy for women has been about driving real change. She questioned why she wouldn’t be involved in the process when an opportunity to contribute presented itself.

She also shared her feelings about being appointed as the Vice President’s Press Secretary, admitting that she did not anticipate the numerous requests that came with the role. However, she expressed her honor in speaking on the Vice President’s behalf, stating that every conversation she has in her new capacity is meaningful to her.

  1. And that is why her office has been packed with another Chief of Staff (at the presidency) together with the old guards as “Advisors”.
