Parliament has approved the latest batch of ministerial nominees put forward by President John Mahama, despite resistance from the Minority regarding the appointment of Samuel Nartey George as Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations.

The approved nominees include Dr. Rashid Pelpuo (Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment), Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology), Kofi Adams (Minister for Sports and Recreation), and Joseph Bukari Nikpe (Minister for Transport). However, Samuel Nartey George’s appointment sparked intense debate.

During Tuesday’s sitting, presided over by Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Minority Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, expressed reservations about Sam George’s nomination, citing his past comments about former President Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. They argued that his history of strong political rhetoric made him unsuitable for the role.

The Majority Caucus, however, dismissed these concerns, insisting that Sam George was qualified for the position and accusing the Minority of unnecessary politicking.

After extensive deliberations, the Minority conceded to the approval of the other four nominees but insisted that Sam George’s appointment be subjected to a secret ballot. However, they later chose to abstain from voting altogether, effectively allowing the Majority to confirm his nomination through a voice vote.

With this latest development, all five ministerial nominees have now been officially approved.
