The Member of Parliament for Tamale South and the owner of Karela United, Haruna Iddrisu, in a passionate address on the floor of parliament on February 4, expressed deep concerns regarding the current state of football in Ghana.
The MP who doubles as Ghana’s Education Minister made these remarks on the heels of recent incidents highlighting poor officiating and violent clashes during a match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko. He raised alarms about the integrity and safety of the Ghana Premier League.
“Our football is not in the best of shapes. Look at the incidents in Nsoatreman. Officiating is at its poorest and our Premier League is not watched” Mr Iddrisu lamented.
His comments reflect a growing frustration among stakeholders in the football community, as poor officiating continues to plague matches and deter fans from attending games, ultimately affecting the sport’s viewership and reputation.
The alarming incidents at the Nsoatreman FC vs. Asante Kotoko match highlighted the urgent need for reforms in officiating standards and conflict resolution within the sport. Iddrisu’s call for change resonates with many who believe that without immediate action, the league’s credibility will continue to decline, further alienating fans and sponsors.
In his speech, Haruna Iddrisu also voiced his support for Kofi Adams, the nominee for Minister for Sports and Recreation.
He expressed confidence in Adams’ ability to instigate positive changes in the sports sector, stating, “I have no doubt that Kofi Adams will make President John Dramani Mahama proud as Sports Minister.”
