A 36-year-old teacher from Freso SDA Junior High School in the Bekwai Municipality, John Ankomah Boateng, has been sentenced to 10 years of hard labor by the Asante Bekwai Circuit Court. He was found guilty of stealing more than GH¢238,550 from Bosomefreho Rural Bank Limited using the GhanaPay app, despite having only GH¢2.23 in his account at the time.
Boateng pleaded guilty to the charges during the court proceedings presided over by His Lordship Isaac Apietu. The prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum, revealed that the theft occurred between February 9 and February 26, 2024, and was reported to the Ashanti South Regional CID on February 28. He was arrested on March 13, 2024.
During interrogation, Boateng admitted to transferring the stolen funds to various individuals for safekeeping, including GH¢10,000 to Isaac, GH¢5,000 to Kwaku, GH¢20,000 to Duah, and GH¢5,000 to Neymar.
Additionally, he sent GH¢40,000 to a travel agent for processing travel documents. Following a thorough investigation, he was charged and brought before the court.
