A toxicologist, Yakubu Adam, has sounded the alarm on the potential health risks associated with long-term use of certain beauty products, particularly for women.

In an interview with TV3 on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Adam highlighted the dangers of transgenerational or multi-generational toxicity, where chemicals in beauty products can affect not only the user but also their unborn children.

According to Adam, even if a woman uses these products for 10-15 years without developing symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), her children may still be at risk. PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can cause infertility, acne, and irregular menstrual cycles.

“The chemicals in these products can cross the placental barrier and affect the eggs of the unborn child, especially if the child is female, This means that even if the mother doesn’t experience any symptoms, her child may develop problems later in life,” Adam explains.

Adam emphasized that regular medical checks may not be enough to detect the accumulation of toxic chemicals in the body.

“Hospitals rarely conduct toxicological screenings, and detecting a single toxic compound can be costly and require multiple screenings,” he said.

Adam warned that relying solely on clinical diagnoses, such as checking for acne or irregular cycles, is not enough to ensure safety. “These symptoms may not be enough to indicate that you’re safe,” Adam cautioned.

Adam’s warnings highlight the importance of being mindful of the chemicals in beauty products and the potential long-term effects on health. In as much as every lady wants to have glowing skin, it is very important for women to take caution in the products they apply to their bodies.
