The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has warned that if urgent action is not taken to control increasing violence among senior high school students, authorities may have no choice but to establish military barracks within school premises.

This comes after recent violent clashes between students, some of whom were armed with dangerous weapons like cutlasses and locally made pistols. The incidents have raised fresh concerns about discipline and character development in schools.

Speaking to Citi News, GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, expressed deep concern over the growing indiscipline among students. He blamed the situation on a general decline in respect and accountability in the country.

He also criticized the lack of consequences for students involved in violent acts, warning that if nothing is done, discipline in schools will continue to deteriorate.

“If care is not taken, we may have to set up military barracks on our campuses to maintain law and order. Since students are now carrying weapons, we might need military personnel on school grounds so that when students pull their weapons, soldiers will also respond accordingly,” he said.

The warning from GNAT has sparked discussions on the need for stricter disciplinary measures and better ways to restore order in schools.

  1. We live in a country where the only language our students listen, when it’s about discipline is “CANE LANGUAGE”.
HOWEVER….We live in an African country where school children cannot be disciplined with a cane for their indiscipline. How then do we discipline students that will really put them on track?
