Foreign Affairs Minister for Ghana , Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced plans to introduce 24-hour passport services aimed at improving efficiency and reducing delays in passport processing. This initiative is part of broader reforms to make the passport system more responsive and citizen-friendly. Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints on Saturday, February 8th, Ablakwa emphasized the need for urgent changes: “It is unacceptable for Ghanaians to endure long waiting periods for passports. My vision is to establish a 24-hour service that ensures swift and reliable passport issuance.”

Ablakwa acknowledged the frustrations many Ghanaians face in obtaining passports and assured the public that his ministry would prioritize efficiency and transparency in passport issuance. He noted that leveraging technology would be crucial: “We will invest in digital solutions, expand processing centres, and enhance service delivery to ensure that passports are issued within the shortest possible time.” This commitment reflects a broader goal of modernizing Ghana’s passport system to meet international standards.

The introduction of 24-hour services aligns with Ablakwa’s pledge to address high application fees as well. He believes that passports should be accessible without posing a financial burden on citizens: “A passport is a fundamental right for every citizen, not a luxury,” he stated earlier.  By focusing on both affordability and efficiency, Ablakwa aims to make passport acquisition seamless for all Ghanaians.

Ablakwa’s vision underscores his commitment to serving the public better by streamlining administrative processes while maintaining quality service delivery: “This is about serving the people better. We will do whatever it takes to make passport acquisition a seamless process for all Ghanaians,” he concluded. Halfway through implementing these reforms, it remains crucial for stakeholders’ input as they move forward with digitization efforts aimed at enhancing overall efficiency without compromising service quality.
