World Vision Ghana has expressed deep concern over recent reports of bullying at Accra Academy and Zuarungu Senior High School, calling for urgent action from school authorities, educational stakeholders, and government.
The organisation described the incidents, involving first-year students, as unacceptable, warning of the long-term impact on victims’ mental health, well-being, and academic performance.
A statement signed by Child Protection and Advocacy Manager at World Vision Ghana, Gregory L. Dery, urged action from school authorities, educational stakeholders, and the government.
The statement described the incidents, involving first-year students, as unacceptable, warning of the long-term impact on victims’ mental health, well-being, and academic performance.
It stated that World Vision Ghana is calling for immediate measures to address the issue. School authorities must conduct swift investigations and ensure accountability for those responsible.
“Education authorities should provide schools with resources and guidance to effectively prevent and respond to bullying. The government must reinforce existing laws and ensure their strict enforcement to protect students. Parents, teachers, and students must work together to promote a culture of respect and inclusivity in schools,” parts of the statement said.
To tackle bullying effectively, Dery urged schools to establish clear policies and reporting mechanisms. “Training for teachers and staff on bullying prevention and intervention strategies is essential. Educating students on the harmful effects of bullying and encouraging them to report incidents will help create a safer environment. Strengthening collaboration between parents and schools is also crucial to safeguarding students’ well-being.”
Mr. Dery expressed solidarity with the affected students and their families, stressing that every child has the right to a safe learning environment, free from fear and harassment.
He reaffirmed World Vision Ghana’s commitment to advocating for policies and interventions that protect children, ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for learning and growth.
