Former Council of State member, Sam Okudzeto, has defended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, as tensions rise within the Ghana Police Service.

Some officers have expressed dissatisfaction with Dr. Dampare’s leadership, accusing him of unfair promotions and restricting police commanders from speaking to the media. These concerns have led some people to call for his removal.

However, in an interview on 3FM’s AGENDA, Mr. Okudzeto strongly opposed these calls. He described Dr. Dampare as a disciplined and professional leader who is focused on doing the right thing.

“I don’t even understand what they are complaining about. I have seen many leaders in this country, and Dr. Dampare is one of the most levelheaded and strict officers we have had,” he said.

Earlier this year, a Kumasi High Court dismissed a lawsuit by 40 police officers who claimed they were unfairly denied promotions. Despite this, some officers remain unhappy with the IGP’s leadership.

Mr. Okudzeto believes that changing the IGP without a strong reason would be unnecessary. He warned against the idea that every new government must replace key officials, saying, “We cannot run a country that way—it makes no sense.”
