Renowned medical doctor and founder of EYA medical consult, Dr. Esther Yesutor Agbozo has raised concerns about the increasing consumption of pork in Ghana warning that it could significantly heighten the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Speaking on the health segment of the GTV Breakfast Show, she explained that pork contains high levels of saturated fat, which can be difficult for the body to break down.

“When you take things like pork, it comes with a lot of saturated fat, and it is difficult for the body to break down such fat,” she stated. According to her, saturated fat is a “heavy fat” that can clog arteries, increase cholesterol levels, and contribute to heart-related complications such as hypertension, stroke, and heart attacks.

She further advised Ghanaians to moderate their intake of processed and fatty meats, including pork, and instead opt for heart-healthy alternatives such as lean meats, fish, and plant-based proteins.

Despite health concerns, pork remains a popular source of protein in many parts of Africa. Data from Pork Money, Africa’s first and largest pig farming platform, reveals that the consumption value of pork in Ghana and Nigeria stands at a staggering $3 billion, according to a 2024 publication by Euro Meat News.

However, health experts caution that while pork can be a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals, excessive consumption—especially of fatty cuts and processed pork products—can have long-term negative effects on heart health.

Dr. Agbozo also emphasized the importance of making informed dietary choices and maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. She urged the public to adopt a lifestyle that promotes heart health, including regular physical activity, drinking plenty of water, and reducing the intake of processed foods high in unhealthy fats.
