Ghanaian cyclist James Kumbeni has announced his ambitious plan to embark on a bicycle journey from Ghana to Morocco.

During an interview on GTV’s Breakfast show, Kumbeni stressed the importance of adopting sustainable transportation methods, particularly cycling, as a means to combat climate change.

His journey is set to begin before the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off in December 2025, marking a significant effort to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Kumbeni expressed his commitment to spreading the message of sustainability, stating, “If we start adopting sustainable means of transport like bicycles, we are heading towards saving the climate and the environment.”

He aims to inspire others to embrace cycling as a viable mode of transportation while also encouraging activities such as tree planting to mitigate the effects of pollution and climate change.

The cyclist plans to traverse several countries on his route, including Burkina Faso, Mali, and Mauritania, before reaching Morocco. Although he has not finalised the exact starting point in Ghana, he reassured viewers that his journey will commence from within the country.

Kumbeni has previously undertaken extensive cycling tours across various regions in Ghana, having covered 11 districts in the Upper West Region alone. His experience in long-distance cycling has equipped him with the knowledge to navigate the challenges of such a journey. “I have visited a whole number of regions and districts,” he mentioned, showcasing his dedication to promoting cycling and environmental awareness at a grassroots level.

Safety and planning are paramount for Kumbeni as he prepares for this significant road trip. He indicated that he would carefully plan his stops, ensuring he does not ride late into the night. “I can normally do between 50 to 150 kilometres in a day,” he noted, emphasising the importance of knowing where to rest during his travels.
