The legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has explained why their client could not appear before the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on February 10, 2025. According to them, Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently outside the country receiving medical treatment.
In a letter dated January 31, 2025, the lawyers stated that their client was unaware of the OSP’s initial request on January 24 because the letter was left at his security post while he was away. They also mentioned that he had informed both the former and current Chief of Staff about his medical trip earlier in January.
The lawyers further explained that Mr. Ofori-Atta is still undergoing medical tests, and his treatment plan has not yet been finalized. Due to this, they have asked the OSP to reschedule his in-person appearance for when he returns to Ghana. They also assured their willingness to provide any necessary information to assist the investigation.
This response comes after the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a fugitive during a press conference on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. The OSP is investigating him for allegedly causing financial loss to the state in multiple transactions involving Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited, the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Electricity Company of Ghana, Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), the National Cathedral project, and the Ministry of Health’s ambulance procurement.
Meanwhile, there were reports that security personnel had raided Mr. Ofori-Atta’s home in Accra. However, the Special Prosecutor denied any involvement in the alleged raid.
