The Minister of State-designate for Public Sector Reforms, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has called for a national dialogue to review and improve the recruitment process within the public sector.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, February 24, 2025, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba emphasized the urgency of reforming the current system to enhance efficiency, meritocracy, and transparency in hiring across government institutions.
She outlined her primary focus, which include capacity building, institutional strengthening, and leveraging technology to combat corruption and improve productivity within government agencies.
She further stressed the need for a thorough review of the hiring process, advocating for a recruitment system that is fair, transparent, and based on merit. According to her, inefficiencies in public sector recruitment directly impact service delivery and governance, given its critical role in national development.
“I will be looking at training or capacity building in the public sector and I will be looking at building and strengthening public institutions and the way we hire people into the public sector and we should therefore have a national dialogue on how we hire and recruit into the public sector,” she said.
Beyond recruitment, she underscored the importance of technology in streamlining operations and reducing corruption within government institutions.
She highlighted digitization as a key solution to eliminating bureaucratic hurdles and minimizing human interference in administrative processes.
“People think that when you mention public sector, it is just about the local service but there are a lot of agencies and so we are going to look at how we can leverage on technology to understand how to deal with corruption,” she noted.
