President John Dramani Mahama has announced the introduction of short military training in a move to instilling discipline and fostering civic responsibility, as part of the National Service Scheme (NSS) during his State of the Nation address on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
President Mahama emphasized the rationale behind this initiative, highlighting its potential to positively impact the character development of the Ghanaian youth.
“We will introduce short military training as part of our National Service Scheme. This will instill a sense of fitness and discipline into our youth,” the President stated.
The specifics of the training programme, including its duration and curriculum, are expected to be detailed by the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment.
However, the President’s announcement underscores his administration’s belief in the value of military discipline in shaping responsible citizens.
While addressing past issues of corruption within the scheme, President Mahama’s primary focus was on strengthening the NSS for the future.
The introduction of military training marks a significant departure from previous approaches and signals a commitment to developing well-rounded and disciplined young Ghanaians ready to contribute to national development.
