Former Barcelona and Spain defender Gerard Piqué has proposed a bold new rule to revolutionise football. Piqué’s idea suggests that matches ending in a goalless draw should result in zero points for both teams, aimed at encouraging more attacking play and preventing dull 0-0 outcomes.

Speaking in an interview with his former Spanish teammate Iker Casillas, Piqué expressed his frustration with the current system, where a goalless draw awards both teams one point each. “You can’t spend €100, €200, €300 to go to the stadium and watch a game end 0-0… In my view, something needs to change,” he said.

The current system rewards draws with one point per team. Piqué’s idea directly challenges this, pushing teams to seek goals and creating a more dynamic and exciting brand of football. However, the proposal has also faced criticism from some quarters, with arguments that it could encourage negative tactics or reduce the sport’s entertainment value.

If implemented, Piqué’s rule could have a trickle-down effect beyond football, inspiring other sports to reconsider their draw rules and prioritize competitive outcomes. For now, his proposal remains a vision for a more attack-centric game, but it raises important questions about the role of rules in shaping sports culture and fan experiences.
