President John Dramani Mahama announced during the State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, the development of a comprehensive national sports policy. This policy is designed to align Ghana’s sports framework with international norms, signaling a bold step towards modernization and excellence.
President Mahama emphasized that the new policy would be accompanied by an exhaustive review of the Sports Act of 2016 (Act 934) and the rigorous enforcement of the Sports Regulations 2023 (LI 2477).
This dual approach ensures that the legal and regulatory frameworks governing sports in Ghana are both robust and effective, setting a foundation for sustained growth and development in the sector.
“We will develop a comprehensive national sports policy to align with international norms. This policy will be accompanied by an exhaustive review of the Sports Act of 2016, that is Act 934, and the rigorous enforcement of the Sports Regulations 2023 LI2477” President Mahama stated.

The policy places a strong emphasis on infrastructure development, with plans to refurbish existing national stadia, complete youth resource centres and construct new sports facilities in the emerging regions.
“Infrastructure development remains paramount in our strategy. The government is committed to refurbishing existing national stadia, completing youth resource centres, and constructing new sports facilities in the new regions” President Mahama affirmed.
The anticipated outcomes of this initiative include improved training conditions, enhanced participation rates among young athletes and the promotion of national pride through sports.
By aligning Ghana’s sports practices with international standards, the policy aims to inspire a culture of excellence and achievement, positioning Ghana as a competitive force in regional and global sports competitions.
