Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has engaged fisherfolk at the James Town Landing Beach as part of her ministerial tour to address key industry challenges.
The Minister emphasised the enforcement of LI 2233, Article 22, to ensure transparency in premix fuel distribution by landing beach committees, eliminating third-party interference. This move aims to restore trust and fairness in the distribution process.
She also highlighted the government’s commitment to marine conservation through this year’s closed fishing season, which applies solely to industrial and semi-industrial fishers.
The MP for Shama constituency announced plans to explore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and closed fishing zones to promote sustainability and protect marine biodiversity.
To alleviate financial burdens on fisherfolk, the Minister assured them that essential fishing inputs would soon be made available with an installment payment plan. This initiative seeks to improve access to critical tools while easing economic pressures on fishing communities.
