Ghana is commemorating its 68th Independence Day today, Thursday, March 6, 2025, under the theme “Reflect, Review, and Reset.” The central event is a ceremonial parade, which is currently underway at the forecourt of Jubilee House, the seat of government, marking a departure from previous large-scale celebrations due to economic considerations.
Live Updates:
9:07 AM: Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang arrived at Jubilee House to participate in the Independence Anniversary Celebration Parade.
9:25 AM: President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama arrived at the venue for the celebration.
9:29 AM: Prayers were offered from Traditional, Islamic, and Christian faiths, reflecting the nation’s religious diversity.
The decision to host the event at Jubilee House aligns with the government’s cost-saving measures.
According to Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, this year’s celebration is expected to cost one-tenth of the GH¢15 million spent on the previous year’s event in Koforidua.
Nationwide, Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Assemblies are conducting modest celebrations, adhering to the theme’s call for reflection and resetting priorities. The rotational policy of hosting Independence Day celebrations in different regions has been suspended to further reduce expenses.
Ghana’s Independence Day commemorates the nation’s liberation from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, making it the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve independence. The day serves as a reminder of the country’s journey toward self-determination and its ongoing efforts to reflect on past achievements, review current challenges, and reset for a prosperous future.
