Eric Edem Agbana, Member of Parliament for Ketu North, has launched the Edem Agbana Scholarship Scheme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at supporting brilliant but financially disadvantaged students in his constituency. During the launch, he pledged to contribute 50% of his monthly salary to sustain the initiative. Edem Agbana described his election as a divine calling to transform lives, rather than mere politics.

The scholarship program which received widespread commendation from chiefs, residents, and stakeholders across the country, awarded financial aid to 302 students in its first phase. 22 of the beneficiaries who are students with special needs will receive full tuition coverage, while 25 young women pursuing STEM programs have received full scholarships. This initiative prioritizes marginalized communities and emphasizes the importance of inclusion.

Out of nearly 1,000 applicants, 300 students were initially selected through a rigorous screening process, with two additional beneficiaries added before finalization.

“I am particularly proud of the inclusivity within this cohort. Of the 302 students, 22 persons with disabilities are receiving 100% funding, ensuring that they too have equal opportunities to succeed. Additionally, 25 young women pursuing studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) will also receive 100% funding,” Edem Agbana explained.

The Ketu North MP further stated “We are also providing 3 students with laptops to aid in
their academic endeavors. The remaining students will receive between 60% to 80% funding, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their educational pursuits.”

Addressing guests at the launch in Dzodze, he stated, “This scheme is dedicated to offering vital financial assistance to tertiary students from Ketu North, ensuring that financial challenges do not stand in the way of their educational dreams.”

Edem Agbana acknowledged donors and pledged to contribute 50% of his monthly salary to sustain the initiative, which is also funded through personal contributions, corporate sponsorships, and community support. A significant donation of GH¢100,000 was made by H.E. Gabriel Kwamegah-Atokple Tanko, the Volta Region’s Council of State representative.

He said “Becoming a Member of Parliament is not just about politics for me it is a calling to serve, a divine mandate to uplift lives. I believe God has placed me here as an instrument of His love and grace.”

The Ketu North Legislator emphasized the importance of academic performance, stating that beneficiaries must maintain strong grades to continue receiving support.

Looking ahead, Edem Agbana plans to prioritize scholarships for professional courses such as medicine, law, and engineering in the next academic year. His long-term vision is for Ketu North to produce some of Ghana’s finest professionals within the next 10 to 15 years, thanks to this initiative.
