President John Dramani Mahama delivered Ghana’s 68th Independence Day address on March 6, 2025, highlighting the importance of fiscal prudence in light of ongoing economic challenges. This year’s celebration, held at the forecourt of the Presidency rather than the traditional Black Star Square, was a more modest affair aimed at reducing costs.
President Mahama highlighted that hosting the event at Independence Square in its usual grandeur would have cost an estimated 20 million Ghana cedis, compared to 15 million cedis spent in Koforidua last year and 13.7 million cedis in Ho the year before.
He emphasized that such expenses are unsustainable amid the current economic challenges, reaffirming the government’s commitment to prudent resource management and fiscal responsibility.
President Mahama also highlighted reforms to reduce the strain on participants, particularly school children, by limiting their time on parade.
These adjustments reflect efforts to balance tradition with practicality while ensuring inclusivity in celebrating Ghana’s independence.
The President acknowledged the previous administration’s initiative to rotate celebrations among regions but expressed regret that this year’s financial constraints necessitated a pause in that practice.
He called for unity and resilience as the nation navigates its economic recovery.
