Ghana marked its 68th Independence Day on March 6, 2025, with a modest ceremony at the Jubilee House, the seat of government. President John Dramani Mahama addressed the nation, emphasizing the significance of the day and the need for unity, resilience, and patriotism.
“Independence Day serves as an opportunity for us to remember our nation’s struggle for freedom and to honor the sacrifices of our forebears who led that struggle for self-rule,” President Mahama stated. “It reinforces our national identity, our unity, and patriotism while offering a moment for reflection on our progress and the challenges ahead.”
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Reflect, Review, Reset,” focusing on assessing Ghana’s current state and planning for a brighter future. Despite economic constraints leading to scaled-down celebrations, the government assured that the significance of the day remains unchanged.
President Mahama highlighted the vision of Ghana’s founder, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, for an industrialized and self-reliant nation. However, he noted that this vision was disrupted by political instability but emphasized the enduring democratic spirit of Ghanaians.
The event featured a Military Guard of Honour, cultural performances by schoolchildren, and a poetry recital by a senior high school student. Similar modest celebrations were held across the country.
