President John Dramani Mahama has instructed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to allocate funds for the commencement of Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project.

He emphasized that this initiative is crucial in addressing the ongoing tidal wave crisis in the Volta Region, which has led to widespread displacement and destruction of homes. Additionally, the project forms part of efforts to resettle affected residents in safer locations.

“I will be directing the Finance Minister to ensure that funding is secured for the launch of Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project,” President Mahama stated.

This directive follows his visit to Agavedzi on Thursday, March 6, where he assessed the damage caused by recent tidal waves, which have displaced hundreds of residents.

Expressing concern over the hardships faced by the affected communities, he reassured them that immediate interventions and long-term measures were being implemented to alleviate their suffering.

President Mahama outlined a dual strategy to tackle the issue effectively.

“We must take two critical steps—initiate the construction of Phase II of the defence wall while simultaneously relocating those who have lost their homes. A more suitable site will be identified for the resettlement project,” he affirmed.
