The government has announced plans to uncap the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), making an additional GH¢4.1 billion available to support the financing of free secondary education and related expenditures.

Presenting the 2025 budget to Parliament, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson emphasised that President John Mahama is committed to ensuring sustainable funding for education by addressing long-standing financial constraints.

“Mr Speaker, the overarching concern about free secondary education has been its quality and the absence of a dedicated source of funding. H.E President John Mahama has resolved the funding challenge by uncapping the GETFund. This makes available dedicated funds for the full financing of free secondary education and free tertiary education for Persons with Disability (PWDs),” he stated.

Beyond uncapping the GETFund, the government has also taken steps to absorb the debt service obligations, including interest and principal, related to the Daakye bond that GETFund had previously contracted.

“Aside the uncapping of GETFund, we have also absorbed the debt service, made up of interest and principal, from the Daakye bond GETFund contracted,” he stressed.

This move is expected to free up additional resources for critical educational investments, including infrastructure, teaching materials, and student support programs.
