Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, shared insights into his political journey during an appearance on GTV’s Breakfast Show on March 12, 2025.

The Tamale Central MP recounted his transition from academia to politics and his rise through various government roles.

Dr. Murtala Muhammed revealed that his political career gained momentum when he won the Nanton parliamentary seat in 2012.

“Then-President John Mahama gave me the privilege to serve as Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations alongside Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu,” he recalled.

He later served briefly at the Ministry of Employment before being reassigned to the Trade Ministry, where he worked for three years. After losing his parliamentary seat in 2016, he considered returning to academia full-time.

Encouraged by Professor Raymond Atuguba, Dr. Murtala pursued a PhD in Political Science at the University of Ghana while also contemplating a career in law.

“My friend Hon. Patrick Boamah insisted I study law and even collected the forms for me,” he said. Reflecting on his early days in student politics, he noted, “I loved and cherished activism—it shaped my commitment to public service.”

Dr. Murtala’s story underscores his dedication to both education and governance, as he continues to contribute to national development through his ministerial role and parliamentary duties.
