The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has raised urgent concerns about the absence of streetlights on major roads across Ghana, describing it as a growing threat to public safety.

Speaking at a news conference on March 13, 2025, he highlighted how the lack of lighting contributes to road accidents and criminal activities, particularly in quiet areas. “This situation is unacceptable and must be addressed immediately to save lives and restore night-time vibrancy in our cities,” Mr. Dwumfour stated.

Mr. Dwumfour called on the Department of Urban Roads, the Ghana Highway Authority, and other relevant agencies to take swift action to fix the streetlights. He emphasized that restoring streetlights would not only reduce accidents and crime but also support the government’s agenda for a 24-hour economy. “Ensuring functional streetlights is crucial for achieving a thriving night economy and enhancing public safety,” he added.

The GJA President urged authorities to prioritize this issue as part of broader national development efforts. He stressed that addressing the problem aligns with the president’s research agenda and contributes to creating safer urban environments. “We cannot afford to let this menace persist—it’s time for action,” he remarked passionately.

The conference concluded with a nationwide call to action under the hashtag #FixOurStreetlightNow, urging citizens and stakeholders to join in advocating for immediate solutions. Mr. Dwumfour reiterated the GJA’s commitment to using its platform to address critical national issues affecting communities across Ghana.
