Labone Senior High School has relocated 155 students to alternative dormitories and a vacant head teacher’s bungalow following a fire that destroyed one girls’ dormitory and partially damaged two others on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

The fire, which broke out in the afternoon while students were attending prep, resulted in the loss of personal belongings, including mattresses and study materials. Fortunately, no injuries were recorded.

Assistant Headmistress Domestic, Mrs. Vera Akpakli, assured that affected students are receiving support, including counselling to help them cope with the trauma. “Some parents have come for their wards, but we are managing the situation,” she said.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly, arriving within seven minutes and bringing the blaze under control by 1:42 PM. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu visited the school and pledged government support to restore the damaged facilities. “We will assess the situation and ensure the dormitories are refitted promptly,” he stated.

Meanwhile, school authorities have appealed for enhanced security and additional dormitories to accommodate their growing student population of over 4,000.
